Photoshop Project

Place: Grand Rapids, Michigan
Setting: Thousand Oaks Golf Club
Issue/Problem: Some people ignore the beauty that is right in front of them. There is things in nature that is normal for a golf course but not normal elsewhere.
Goal: To show different beauties where people might not see it.
Introduction: I chose the golf course because I have worked there for 6 summers now and my family recently build a house on the 18th green about 3 years ago. It is a place that I know very well and a place I am comfortable at. I have grown up being around golf my whole life because when I was younger I took lesson but as I got older I didn’t like it so much that I stopped. My sister however, is still playing to this day as well as my dad. Some of the areas where I took pictures were places that people will not look at to see beauty normally at a golf course. Yes, when you drive around on the course, there are a lot of beautiful places out there however, there is more to it than that. I also thought this would be a great place to photograph because there is a lot of places to go to. I only chose one main area but there was still a lot in that area.

Original Images: Theses were all the images that I used while making my 3 postcards as well as the back side of them.

Back of Postcard:

Postcard #1: In my first postcard I focused on repetition and the work from Tom Bamberger. I kept it simple but at the same time, it still works well as a whole. Having the areas where the images connect play an interesting part in the image. Having the different paths I think plays on golf a little more because when you golf your ball could go anywhere just like these paths are.

Techniques: Mirror, hue/saturation

Postcard #2: I experimented a lot in this one with using the pattern overlay option. I haven’t used it much in the past so I wanted to see what you can do with it. I liked the results and what they were doing. I wanted to do something that you normally don't see at a golf course, giant golf ball and crazy patterns and colors. I think this images executes that quite well. I also made a golf ball into a moon because (1) you never see a golf ball as a moon and (2) you never see the moon during the day.

Technique: Copy, pattern overlay, hue/saturation, layer masks

Postcard #3: The photo was pretty dull to begin with you I played around with hue and saturation to see what that would do and I liked the results. The color stands out a lot better than the original. I chose to do a funny quote from a famous golfer because we love to have fun and laugh and joke around while working so I thought a funny quote was only fitting.

Technique: Type mask tool, hue/saturation, bevel/emboss, lens flare filter

Comments

  1. An interesting take on the problem posing statement. The text in the third photo is pretty lighthearted and funny, though I wish that picture did not have thats "hole" peaking through the words.

  2. I think that your first postcard repetition is the most creative. I love the way you extend the pavement. It comes down too the pond and then goes away from the pond. I think the use of color is very effective. You have created a very beautiful image.

  3. I really love your first and second postcards! The first image is beautiful and the second is so interesting to look at. You can see your problem-solving at work and they're very successful.

  4. I like the second post card, the golf balls behind the trees show a good sense of depth. I appreciate the simplicity of the photos and the continuous color scheme.

  5. Your first postcard is the most creative. I like the idea of the path going in many directions giving the option of what path will you take and where will the ball go.

  6. I really like the first postcard you created. The mirror effect really makes you think about what you are viewing. Many people just mirrored their images in one way but I appreciate your experimentation with mirroring four times.

  7. I love the giant golf balls on the second the post and the patterns you put on the trees. The changes in color are really subtle but with the golf ball you really don't need to do much more.

  8. I like the golfballs in the trees. They make the environment a lot of fun. The text blends seamlessly in the ground on the third postcard and the lens flare really looks like it belongs.

  9. I like the second picture in the project. The alterations made to the trees draw attention to them, and the concept of the differently colored golfball as the moon is interesting. I like the golfballs hidden behind the trees, it reminds me of trying to find lost balls in the forests and roughs, when you're forced to pay attention to nature.

  10. The first picture looks like it could be hung in a gallery! It doesn't have a hint of fakeness to it- its very serene, calm, and mature. I think the message behind it is clever, too.
